San Exequiel Moreno

ON THE BANKS OF THE EBRO, IN ALFARO, a small farming town of La Rioja (Spain), the modest tailor Felix Moreno and his wife, Josefa Diaz, had six children, four girls and two boys. Ezekiel, the second son and fourth of the brothers, was born on April 9, 1848. He was a smart kid, very responsible, quiet and steady.

SAN EXEQUIEL MORENO PARISH was erected mainly to attend to the spiritual and physical needs of people from Labahita and Langaray. Today’s parish started out of a simple chapel, which also served as a livelihood training center. It was under the supervision of then Blessed Lorenzo Ruiz Parish, which has its parish priest in the person of Reverend Fr. Edgardo Merin.

On December of 1984, Reverend Fr. Meria Giovanni Tardetti, a Somascan priest, arrived from Italy, and stayed in the livelihood center for a year. Then, on June 1, 1985, Dominican Fathers arrived under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Reynaldo Adalid, OP, who later on became the parish priest of the Blessed Lorenzo Ruiz National Shrine and Livelihood Center. Rev. Fr Romeo Asuzano, OP, became the Rector of the Shrine while Rev. Fr. Jesse Lorete and Brother Bonifacio Mergal, OP, managed the livelihood center.

In 1992, two years after the canonization of San Lorenzo Ruiz, Fr. Adalid petitioned for the establishment of the chapel/ livelihood center as a parish. It was in November 1, 1992 that San Lorenzo Ruiz Chapel was Erected into a parish and was thus named as San Exequiel Moreno Parish. The first Parish Priest was Rev. Fr. Ronaldo “Boyet” Pedroso and was succeeded by Rev. Fr. Elpidio A. Erlano, Jr. in May 2013.

His father had just died and the family had been in very precarious financial situation, but the generous gifts mother. A year later, Ezekiel professes and vows to go as a missionary to the Philippines. In 1869, without finishing school, partly to those lands, where he was ordained a priest. It is a 23 year old full of spiritual energy and excitement. His love for the Lord, and the conviction to be an apostle, will be absorbent so the only reason for their activity. After months of ministry with his brother, is sent to the expedition is to colonize always difficult island of Paragua.

The zeal of Brother Ezequiel overflows on his first mission, which is about preaching, teaching and building. His work with the expedition is heroic, but the effort produced a terrible consequence of obtaining malaria, forcing him to return to Manila.

His willingness and zeal manifested in countless ways: as a pastor, catechist in Manila, and later on as the administrator of an estate. Although he held a high position, he was still close to ordinary Filipinos, calling him “the santulón”, or the holy man.

Who takes a peek into the life of St. Ezekiel immediately discovers a landscape populated by human and divine essences. His life of was made of constant prayers and identification with Christ. At half past eight on August 19, at 58, he rested in the Lord.
Until now, his body remains incorrupt. His reputation for holiness has endured constant among brothers in religion and those who knew him personally or heard of him.

In 1975 he was beatified by Pope Paul VI. And Pope John Paul II canonized him in Santo Domingo on October 11, 1992, in the V Centenary of the Evangelization of America. The saint of evangelization. The tireless missionary. A man of God.
