ON AUGUST 21, 1963, the Archbishop of Manila, His Eminence Rufino J. Cardinal Santos created a new parish in Malabon, with Rev. Msgr. Pacifico Maria Mendoza as its parish priest. Msgr. Mendoza was given the huge task of building a parish out of nothing. Since there was no lot or even a temporary chapel in the vicinity, masses were held at the Manila Railroad Hospital or at the lawns of several private residences.

Finally, on September 1964, a 3, 312 square meter lot located at the corner of Araneta Avenue and Caimito Road was purchased, and on the 30th of November, construction started for the seat of the parish. At that time, parishioners had to bring their own chairs in the pew–less and door–less church.

After the organization of the first parish pastoral council in 1966, another construction, this time for the new church, was initiated. It was completed five years after. Msgr. Mendoza designed the image of Saint Gabriel and wrote a novena in the Archangel’s honor. It was in 1977 that Msgr. Mendoza was replaced by Rev. Fr. Alfred Santos; then by Rev. Fr. Norberto Habos; followed by Rev. Fr. Joseph Tambio, Rev. Msgr. Marcelino Montemayor, Rev. Msgr. Manuel Sebastian, Rev. Fr. Alex Yap, Rev. Fr. Nong Yebra, Rev. Fr. Frank Bagadiong, Rev. Fr. Nestor Gungon, Rev. Msgr. Wilfredo C. Paguio, and Rev. Msgr. Alex Amandy.
Gabriel the Archangel

Angel Gabriel, one of the four high angels, is considered as the messenger of God. He is also the angel of Revelation and one of the six angels of death. The Bible depicts him as a man when in communion with humans. He is the same angel that provided the information to Daniel, and Mary, Jesus Christ’s mother.

Gabriel is also known in the Bible as a guardian angel, as he served as protector of the infant Abraham and Moses. He is one of the chief princes in heaven, along with Michael, and as well called as the “prince of fire”.

In Hebrew, Gabriel’s name literally means “the strength of God”. It is through this strength that the San Gabriel de Archangel Parish asks Gabriel, to give them strength and faith, and to intervene for them unto God.
