The Sta. Lutgarda chapel was the first chapel built in Bagong Barrio. In 1960, Bro. Francisco Quiambao brought the image of Sta. Lutgarda to the chapel from Macabebe, Pampangga. The feast of Sta. Lutgarda is celebrated every 15th of June but in Bagong Barrio the feast is held every third Sunday of May in thanksgiving for the end of harvest season in Macabebe, Pampanga.

The cursillistas maintained the chapel. They invited priests from other parishes to celebrate masses there. In 1970, the faithful of Bagong Barrio wrote a petition to Cardinal Rufino Santos, the first cardinal of the Philippines, to elevate Bagong Barrio into a parish. Fr. Edelberto Santos was the one tasked by the Cardinal to conduct a three month survey to explore the possibility of making Bagong Barrio a parish. The petition was approved and a committee was formed to oversee the construction of a new church for the parish. The proximity of Sta Lutgarda chapel to the Sacred Heart Parish made the committee choose another site for the new church. Hence, the church was built at its current site and the Birhen ng Lourdes parish was established.

In 1972, the Sta. Lutgarda chapel was moved to Gen Malvar Extension, its current location. Fr. Romeo Villanueva, the first parish priest of Birhen ng Lourdes organized the first Sta. Lutgarda Local Council. In 1975, Bgy. Capt. Jose Laxamana became the council’s first president. The following followed thereafter: 1980 – Bro. Antonio Buena, 1985 – Bro. Arturo Castro, 1990 – Sis. Nena De Torres, 2000 – Sis. Jean Devibar, 2002 – Sis. Nena De Torres, 2004 – Sis. Eleanor Pador.

Several renovations were made to the chapel’s structure through the years. During the term of Bro. Arturo Castro, the structure was upgraded from wood to semi-concrete. The façade, the bell tower, the kitchen and the comfort room were built during the term of Sis. Nena De Torres.

On May 25, 2005 Bishop Deogracias Iñigues Jr. D.D. assigned Fr. Luis Eduardo F. Zapata, IVE, as Parish Priest and Fr. Salvador Curuchet, IVE as Assistant Priest of the proposed Quasi-Parish comprising of ten Barangays in Bagong Barrio West. Now under the care of the Institute of the Incarnate Word, Sta. Lutgarda, chapel was elevated into a church. The priests celebrated masses not only on Sundays but on Saturdays and weekdays as well.

To get to know the people of the new quasi-parish, Fr. Luis and Fr. Salvador sought the help of the SSVM Sisters to conduct a week-long mission to visit the homes of the parishioners. The priests blessed the peoples’ dwellings while the Sisters conducted interviews. This way they were able to gather information about the families and the community within the ten barangays under the quasi-parish. They realized that many would still attend mass in the nearby parishes and that many children were not baptized. Fr. Luis asked permission from the Bishop to conduct baptism at the Sta. Lutgarda church for free. His request was granted.

On October 15, 2006, Fr. Luis Zapata appointed a new set of officers among the laity serving in the church. Planning for the construction of a new church for the quasi-parish started with the constitution of the church construction committee. The committee is composed of the following: Chairperson – Bro. Eulalio Trinidad Jr.; Co-chairman – Bro. Ricardo Espanillo; Treasurer – Bro. Danny Magday.

y God’s Providence different donation and benefactors appear and Fr. Luis met Architect Alex Ocampo of Angeles, Pampanga and Engineer Ceilito Ypil of Quezon City who offered their professional services for the church construction for free. Mr. Desiderio Domingo, a contractor and parishioner, was convinced by Sis. Nena De Torres to offer his services for free as well. His workers, however, received full payment for their work.

Through the tireless efforts of the parish priest and assistant priests, the SSVM Sisters and the Lay workers of the quasi-parish, various fund raisings were done. Financial help and pledges came from within the community and abroad, mostly, friends and benefactors of the Institute of the Incarnate Word. In the end, the “most beautiful house” in Bagong Barrio was constructed. On May 8, 2009, the church was dedicater after the patroness of the Religious Family of the Incarnate Word, the Virgin Mary of Lujan, in Argentina. On May 8, 2010, the new quasi-parish is established as the Birhen ng Lujan Quasi-Parish by Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez Jr. DD.
